Soooo, I bought a honcho
Yep, just spent the last 9 hours trying to bleed the shocks and 1 hour assembling the rest of the car (I kid)
Nothing out of the ordinary yet. I got some alloy C hubs with it, the plastic shocks seem quite strong amazingly enough so I'll see how they go. What's the most common thing on there that I'm most likely to break and want to upgrade/buy lots of spares of?
I stole the motor, battery and receiver out of my CR-01 because I'm putting it in the naughty corner for a while.
I'm not sure how long the steering servo will last though. When I "modified" the angle the wire comes out at (i.e. grabbed it and just tore the rubber bit off) I kind of stripped some insulation. Nothing's touching yet but sooner or later it's gonna fry. I'll re-solder it later & shorten the lead so there's not so much to try and keep tidy but right now I just wanna play with it
Custom fabricated aluminium ESC mount. I reckon that's gotta be worth at LEAST $5
No paint yet because a) it's 2am and b) I only just finished putting it together & tidying up the mess I left behind in the garage.
So, now when there's a quarry run on I'll be able to fit through that pesky tunnel

Yeah a couple of people have mentioned the swampers are kind of "cheaty" and I'm really impressed how well they went today on my little test run.
Is there anything to be gained by switching to a 4 link setup?

i run a 4 link personally, i think it works better than the Y type 3 link it also takes away the weaker plastic y link with a stronger metal 4 link set up, but i have seen standard honchos go as far in not further at times aswell

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
my philosophy on plastic bits.....keep using them until they break, then replace them with a metal version.
needless to say my honcho weighs a ton with all the steel replacement bits, but hey, if ya cant drive this one hard what can you ?

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
also remember as you strengthen certain bits the weakness gets passed further down the line. so if you intend to run steel drive shafts then you may want to look at replacing all internal cogs to the gearcase with metal as well, otherwise you will strip teeth.
i agree with ads. 4 link in the back is a must. more stability and less twist, especially on side slopes.

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
Don't really know about the colour scheme, I'm not really that artistic For the time being I'm using the jeep commanche that I previously had on the CR01
So after I found a bit of water at the quarry & had a play it seems my ESC got a tad drowned & stopped working. I cleaned it all off and it seems to work again (I doubt it'll stay working for long though) so I decided to have at it with some plastidip.
I don't intend ever putting it back in its original case so once the 2 halves of the ESC are coated I'll plug them back together & coat the plugs too.
Reason I'm not too fussed about frying this ESC is because the lipo cutoff on this ESC is far too low for my liking and was thinking about getting a castle ESC because you can set higher cuttoff limits on them (well you can on my MMM anyway). Anyone run a castle ESC in these things? The only options on this current ESC is auto or off. Nice. Otherwise I've got a second one of these ESC's in my comp crawler
Or I could go all out & put the MMM & motor out of my savage in the honcho
I've also got the winch in & made another plate for it to come through.

Well after the dip dried the car was acting all funny, moving on its own so I tried to reset the end points but then the ESC just started smoking so I gave it one final send off.
I'm now making a waterproof box for the esc + receiver (or trying to).

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
So this stupid waterproof box thing is proving to be kind of a pain in the butt. Has anyone here waterproofed their gear this way or does everyone just do the balloon thing? Balloon thing
The main problems I'm having are that the lid on the box is too thin and just flexes (it's a cheapo jiffy box not a Tupperware container) and where I WAS going to put the battery, I didn't think my plan all the way through & cut holes in the box there, now the ESC wires get in the way I think I'll just make my own stainless box for ESC, battery & receiver one day when I'm bored. Not sure how a metal box will affect the radio gear though.
OOOOOOOOOOOOH and while I was trying to reset the ESC end points the damn car just took off so when I tried to grab it I shoved my finger in the damn gear box and there's a big slice up my finger. Metal spur gears hurt, people!

I had a neon sign transformer here I was going to use on it but it's not where I thought it was & couldn't be bothered going looking through all the junk to find it. 24v got the job done in any case. Plus you know me and high voltage.ax10 crawler wrote:oooo pretty

yep like Azwa said jaycar. They have all sorts or screw top electrical boxes that are rubber sealed and they are cheap.

my esc is covered in a layer of clear silicon and any areas on it needing venting scrapped off. I have not had one ounce of problems with it in the wet.

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
Well the waterproof jaycar box was a great success.
I went through much deeper waters than this without any getting in to the esc/battery. I was worried about heat too, being a sealed box, but after about an hour+ of run time the ESC was barely even warm to the touch, same with the battery.

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
So I somehow managed to break my (very cheap) winch hook without even using it. I guess it must have been from slamming into rocks all day at full speed (also broke a steering arm) *insert evil laugh here*
Naturally I decided to make myself an AwesomeHookâ˘
Compare the original cheap hook to mine.
I don't know whether it's 304 or 316 stainless but either way I'm pretty sure my scrawny little honcho won't be snapping that hook any time soon (or bending it).
What kind of tough line do you guys (and girls) use instead of whatever that line is that's on there? Fishing line trace wire? My cheapy winch isn't capable of snapping even that line but with all the water crossings and rubbing of the hook on the line I'm scared it'll either rot and I'll lose my precious hook, or the hook will eventually just cut right through the line.

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
Aperture and I have braided fishing line 20kg i think? Scott can correct me here, flexible and tough.
Can you show a picture of the box sealed up lid on etc? and a wdier view to see how its fits in the schem of Honcho things?
Cheers,
Jase.

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
I can make a video of the box if you want but here's some pictures with it in place, lid on.
The mount plate it sits on is just a bit of perspex I cut into that shape, drilled some holes in it and used the original radio mount things. I drilled the holes in the chassis out to 3mm and screwed them to the chassis where previously they just sat in there located only by the little holes and their connection to the radio box. The black rubbery stuff is some kind of tool box drawer liner that came with my tool chest.
The holes in the bottom of the box don't actually go up inside the box, they're in a separate chamber specifically designed to let you mount the box to something without letting water in. In case you wonder where the battery plugs in, that's actually inside the box too so the only things outside are the cheap $30 servo, motor of unknown $ value because it came free with my CR-01 and my winch.

Re: Soooo, I bought a honcho
More goodies.
Transmission cover because exposed gears on an offroad car is quite silly
I see on a couple of other scale forums people had trouble fitting this thing to their honcho but I had zero issues fitting it.
Vertical steering servo mount
In order to fit this thing I had to remove the upright posts from the axle and the arm that goes from the servo to the steering hits on the axle so that'll need a bit of a bend in it.
This one I got, not for the "scale look", but because my servo wires were getting munched by the frame.
I was asked about tilt steer or bump steer or something but when you tilt the chassis side to side, or press down on it the wheels don't move so no issues there.
