3s test run
ok got the new batt in and having test run in back yard. holly sh!t i wasnt expecting such a change in power this thing does doughnuts now
however the test didnt go so well
tested the winch, it works a little to well i ripped the thing off the front of the rig
ran the thing flat out all over the shop checking temps as i went. all of a sudden it shuddered and wouldnt drive then poof the motor went up in smoke it wasnt even warm i could still hold my hand on the motor and esc.
running an 18.5t venom brushless with 16t pinion and standard axial spur (87t i think) and 120amp esc, the same gearing i ran with 2s.
Any ideas as to why the smoke came out????

Re: 3s test run
Yeah besides is Venom (hobbywing in green) sounds like it was just its time.
Scotty's one went because it was over-geared, but yours wasnt, or shouldnt have been anyway....There was no heat buildup which means it it wasnt over geared or binding up.
To me it sounds like the sensor sh!t its pants (the shudder) and took the whole motor with it.

Re: 3s test run
yer its was an older motor this is the second rig its been in.
i think the 18.5 is a little to fast with the 3s.
whats a good sensored brushless motor to look into?

Re: 3s test run
ok the plot thickens...
i pluged in a 6.5t motor into the sppedy to do a bench test to make sure i didnt cook anything else,
within 3seconds of turning the truck on the speedy decided to go up in smoke aswell
i did check to make sure that it could handel 3s
so now i am up for a complete new setup

Re: 3s test run
Sounds like the speedy might have been at fault from the start....it couldve dropped a phase (again the stutter) and then shorted internally. Then snowballed and blown the motor.
Its strange though, cause that set up can run 3s and it shouldn't have worried it.

I beg to differ...rizza, as you have witnessed i ran my Venom brushless for 2yrs under over and through gallons of water and cained the hell out of it. So i still recon there not to bad for the $.
Adam....what the?......super bad luck mate. The curse of the 3S.......
**** the brushless mate...I'm going a good brushed set up.

Yeah the best of the best IMO is a MMP.....Up to 6s lipo, brushed, sensored or sensorless brushless, blah blah blah...
As for sensored brushless motors...Tekin or Epic/Trinity are some of the best around...But even cheap sensored motors off fleabay etc are pretty good.

yer i agree with scotty here rizza mine was around the 2yr old mark aswell, has been flogged around in my 2.2 then the speedy ended up in my drifter (suprised it still ran after scotts super crash running 6.5t on grip tyres) for a while before its final resting place of the scaler. for the price i think it was a great setup.
yer still up in the air on what to go with scotty i liked the brushless, and i dont do the summarining that i used to other wise it would be brushed.
thanks troy i will sus out those motors today. do you have a link to the flea bay ones you speak of?

Re: 3s test run
Even i'll agree that the motors & speedies lasted a fair while...Venom quality control has improved alot. But in saying THAT, those speedies were actually venom, there were hobbywing/turnigy in green...
Here ya go man...
2700kv 13.5t (approx the same as a 27t brushed motor): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOBBYWING-2700-KV-13-5T-Sensored-Brushless-Motor-/250843058487?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a67695137

Re: 3s test run
6 one half dozen the other...
The tekin specs at: 131watts & 2500kv...So its more power that a 27t super stock but with slightly less RPM.
The Trinity specs at: 2300kv with the same watts....
So the trinity would is slower RPM wise, but still produces the same power. So in theory the trinity would be the higher torque of the 2 and also produce a better power band.
To put it into perspective the venom 18.5t is 2700kv, but only 115watts....
Comes down to which you want...I'd go for the Trinity just for the better specs...
Becareful going from ebay though, most of the sellers for this gear are in the US.

Closest to a 27t...But brushed vs. brushless doesnt really compare directly.
Put it this way, on 3s your rig is going to haul ass...
Dropping the specs into the RC calc, geared 14 pinion 87 spur top speed is almost 11km/h (approx)
Thats pretty freakin fast for a crawler man...*I can see broken sh!t in your future*

Re: 3s test run
i no they dont compare but just as a rough guess.
11km/hr way to fast might look into the 21.5t.
future? i can already see a pile of broken sh!t on my desk

Re: 3s test run
Yeah but you're 13.5t is only about 200KV more than the Epic 17.5t is and makes only about 2/3rds of the watts...lol...Torque & wattage is what breaks sh!t.Ads wrote:i run 13.5t brushless on 3s(14t pinion 87 spur) id like to think i drive as hard as anyone i dont break that much stuff, ive done more rod ends than anything else lately but thats probly due to the wight gain from the bar work. speed is your friend
A 21.5t ROARSpec motor is 2100kv, and the 21.5t 'rock crawler' motor is 2000kv (both trinity/epic)...so they'll still have some speed, but wont be quite as insane as the 17.5t
